Will Carson Palmer be a legit NFL quarterback?

Carson Palmer was the first pick in the NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. It was no suprise and nearly everyone expected him to be the first pick. He was the safe pick and on paper seems to be the best option available for the Bengals. He has potential to be a decent NFL quarterback but I have some reservations about christening him as the savior of the Bengals.

If you look at Carson Palmer's college career he was basically a big lump of unfulfilled potential up until the last half of his senior season. He wasn't a dominant quarterback for a multiple seasons like Byron Leftwitch or Rex Grossman. He did finish off his college career with some great games and some great numbers but why didn't he do any of that earlier in his career?

I can see him along the lines of a Tim Couch more than a Peyton Manning. He will be able to put up some OK numbers but I don't think he can lead the Bengals to the playoffs any time soon. If the Bengals are smart they will keep him off the field most of the year and let him sit on the bench and learn. Carson Palmer will need time to learn the NFL game and the new offensive system and I think a veteran in Jon Kitna can perform better than an inexperienced Carson Palmer this year. In a couple years Carson Palmer will be a decent NFL quarterback but I don't think he will be at the All-Pro level any time soon.

If the Bengals end up tanking in the first half of this upcoming season (which I don't think will happen) then they can throw Carson Palmer in as a starter and let him learn the hard way. I predict the Bengals will end up with 7 or 8 wins this year and I don't think Carson Palmer should start until the Bengals are eliminated from playoff contention which should be around week 13 or week 14. By sitting most of the season and learning he will be able to step in and lead the Bengals to the playoffs in the 2004 season.
