Byron Leftwich - Great quarterback or great Marshall quarterback?

At Marshall Byron Leftwich put up some huge numbers. Were those numbers the result if his ability or the system at Marshall? That is a question that will have to be answered in Jacksonville if Leftwich is going to take over for Mark Brunell.

Byron Leftwich spend a couple years learning under Chad Pennington at Marshall but in the three years he started he passed for 3,358, 4,132, and 4,268 yards. He also showed very good accuracy completing over 65% of his passes in those three years. Byron showed the ability to throw a great deep ball and also thread the needle into coverage when he needs to. He will need to work on his dump off passes to his backs though.

Some people are comparing Byron Leftwich to Daunte Culpepper but I don't really see too many similarities. They are both big, strong quarterbacks and both are great passers. Leftwich isn't as good a runner as Culpepper though. He can escape some potential sacks in the backfield but isn't much of a threat to take off and run for 50 yards per game.

Many people were thinking that the Jacksonville Jaguars should start over Mark Brunell but after Brunells performance in week 1 it is clear that he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Brunell will most likely be gone next year and Letfwich will take over but he needs to spend this year learing the NFL game from Brunell. There have been many quarterbacks that have put up great numbers in college but done nothing in the NFL because they were thrown out there too quickly. In 3 or 4 years Leftwich, if he can avoid any more lower leg problems, will be a very good NFL quarterback but he still has a lot of the little things he needs to learn.
